We can only guess at this based on the harshness and ugliness of the work.
Florencio de Arboiro claims that the place where he has been working for over 35 years has had the greatest influence on his art. It is a psychiatric hospital in Toen. He runs Art Therapy Workshops there. Since he is a sculptor himself, the patients mainly engage in sculpture, and what they do and how they do it directly influences Arboiro's own individual work. The experience he gained there changed his way of seeing things. It blurred the boundaries between what is normal and what is not. It changed the definition of madness. As he himself says in one of his interviews, every drop of metal that shapes the works created in the workshops is smelted in a crucible of suffering and then cooled with many tears. Arborio enjoys the privilege of living in a world where people say what they really think and feel. Without the filters of correctness or normality.
Florencio de Arboiro was born in 1945 in Overense. He grew up in Spanish Galicia, a region with a difficult history. He is a collector of sharpeners. To this end, he established a foundation and founded a museum that enjoys high attendance. Wandering grinders are his way of describing the history of Galicia.
I have not been able to find out much about Arboiro's work itself. I have seen many of his sculptures and the covers of publications dedicated to him. So I guess he is a prolific and recognized artist. His sculptures resemble art brut. This is not surprising when you know where the artist spends his days. However, unlike his patients, he filters his art through knowledge, professional skills, and thousands of years of art history.
The sculpture depicts a figure in motion. Its title speaks of violence. We can only guess this based on the harshness and ugliness of the work. And violence is ugly and causes trauma. Arboiro knows this from his Art Therapy Workshops.
The sculpture is 26 cm high, including the wooden base. It is 9 cm wide and 25 cm long. The dimensions of the wooden base are 15 x 7 x 5 cm.
