The folk origin of the bronze would be supported by the careless, primitive workmanship of the sculpture and the quality of the casting.
I am forced to revise my initial description of this sculpture, in which I concluded that the figurine was a non-canonical representation associated with folk art. I underestimated the multitude of representations of Buddha. A friend who is an antique dealer sent me a link to a French gallery's website, where an identical bronze is offered for sale. I have no choice but to rely on the knowledge of more educated people and accept their opinion.
As I have mentioned many times before, when shopping, I am guided solely by my own sensibilities, which means that I buy items that I like or that intrigue me in some way. In this particular case
, I decided that the Buddha was indeed old. And such an item is quite rare among the multitude of copies and tourist souvenirs. Book knowledge and familiarity with styles and eras are, of course, invaluable. But equally important
is experience and intuition. And I usually follow them in my choices.
The Buddha is 10 cm high and 9 cm wide.
