The expression and deformations of the mask are astonishing. I know of no other mask in which the representation of the human face has been so fundamentally altered.

The Tikar people believed that a child was created from a woman's menstrual blood.

 The leopard usually supported the seat of a stool or the bowl of a basin. In the case of this sculpture, it appears that it was created immediately as a representation of a leopard without any practical function. At least, there is no trace suggesting that it was ever otherwise.

The ceilings and some of the walls of these buildings were entirely covered with painted panels. I feel genuine admiration when looking at photographs of the interiors of these buildings. The more enthusiastic art critics compare their significance to that of Gothic cathedrals in Europe.
