Dogon sculptures, and the sculpture I am offering is a beautiful example of this, depict the human body in a simplified way. They are elongated with an emphasis on geometric forms. The figures are almost cubist. They have oval heads, square shoulders, and straight, long limbs that taper downwards. However, the stylization and simplification do not deprive the sculptures of their individual character.

In fact, it was only when looking at the oldest Beninese bronzes that I saw a certain similarity. The ornaments were somewhat similar. The roosters decorating the spoon handle could have come from Benin. The style of the animals depicted reminded me of Beninese art.

I decided to place the crucifix outside the category of tribal art due to its universal character, although I believe that the creator of the sculpture is someone who has been exposed to tribal art since childhood and grew up with it.

As for these particular weights, they come from different sets. I came across them in Paris and had the privilege of choosing from a really large collection. I am convinced that they are old, even from the 18th century.

Kali is a dark-skinned beautiful woman, dressed in tiger fur, multi-armed, and each of her armed hands can kill demons. A distinctive feature of Kali sculptures is a necklace made of skulls or heads of defeated enemies.

 The figure of the saint has been only roughly sketched out, consisting of two geometric shapes. Despite this, we can see a woman in archaic robes, clearly corresponding to our schematic ideas of what a "saint" should look like.

The headboard is also associated with the beliefs of many tribes that sleep and dream projections are the interference of ancestral spirits in life on earth. An appropriate headboard, in accordance with tribal canon, enables communication with ancestors. Headboards often take the form of totemic tribal sculptures to ensure the safety of such contact.

The figure probably represents an ancestor who is supposed to act as a guardian, a guard defending the protected area against evil forces. In this case, it is probably a household, and rather a wealthy one at that.

I think the sculpture was created in the mid-20th century in a provincial workshop. It is closer to the tradition of folk art than to the workshops of the great masters, although it is difficult to deny its beauty.

In accordance with the second meaning of the Chinese word, I am selling rather the idea, the image of the magnificence of this sculpture from the time of its creation. What has been preserved suggests that it was dynamic and depicted an elephant in decorative harness, the remains of which can still be seen today. The animal probably had its trunk raised and was in motion, perhaps running. But these are only imaginings.

The work refers to antiquity. It brings to mind Greek statues ravaged by the passage of time.

One of the most popular Senufo masks is Kpelie, which translates as "the face of a jumping performer." The prototype for Senufo masks is the face of a beautiful woman, because in the Senufo religion, the central figure is a female ancestral spirit, an ancient mother from whom the world began.
